Background of the Study:
School libraries serve as essential academic hubs that facilitate learning, research, and intellectual development among students. In Katagum LGA, Bauchi State, the utilization of school libraries has been identified as a key factor influencing the academic performance of secondary school students. The availability of diverse resources such as books, periodicals, digital media, and reference materials plays a critical role in supplementing classroom instruction and fostering independent learning (Sule, 2023). Effective library usage not only supports the development of research skills but also encourages students to engage in self-directed study, thereby improving their academic outcomes (Ibrahim, 2024).
Despite these potential benefits, several challenges impede optimal library usage in many secondary schools within Katagum LGA. These challenges include inadequate funding, poor infrastructure, limited staffing, and outdated or insufficient resources. Consequently, many students are unable to fully leverage the educational opportunities provided by school libraries. Recent studies have shown that when library services are effectively integrated into the overall academic framework, students tend to perform better academically due to improved access to learning materials and enhanced information literacy skills (Garba, 2023).
In Katagum LGA, where educational resources are often scarce, the school library represents a critical area of intervention. An evaluation of current library usage practices is necessary to understand the extent to which these facilities contribute to academic performance. This study seeks to examine how the frequency, quality, and manner of library usage affect the academic achievements of secondary school students. It will explore not only the availability of resources but also the attitudes of students and teachers towards the library, the level of training provided for effective usage, and the overall management of library services. By identifying the strengths and weaknesses of existing library practices, the study aims to provide recommendations for enhancing library services, thereby contributing to improved academic outcomes and fostering a culture of reading and research among students (Amin, 2025).
Statement of the Problem :
Secondary schools in Katagum LGA face significant challenges in maximizing the benefits of school library resources. Despite the recognized importance of school libraries in enhancing academic performance, many institutions struggle with low patronage, underutilization of available resources, and inadequate infrastructure. These challenges are compounded by insufficient funding, which results in outdated materials and limited access to digital resources (Sule, 2023). Consequently, students are deprived of the opportunity to develop crucial research and information literacy skills, which are essential for academic success.
The underuse of school libraries has become a persistent problem in Katagum LGA, negatively affecting the academic performance of secondary school students. Many students report that library facilities are either difficult to access or poorly maintained, leading to a general lack of interest in utilizing these resources. Additionally, teachers often do not integrate library resources into their lesson plans, thereby missing the opportunity to enhance classroom learning through supplemental materials (Ibrahim, 2024). The cumulative effect of these issues is a decline in students’ academic performance and a reduced capacity for independent learning. This study intends to evaluate the current state of school library usage in Katagum LGA, analyze its impact on academic performance, and identify the systemic challenges that hinder effective library utilization. The ultimate goal is to develop recommendations that will improve library services, increase student engagement, and ultimately lead to better academic outcomes (Garba, 2023).

Significance of the Study :
This study is significant as it explores the critical role of school libraries in enhancing academic performance in secondary schools in Katagum LGA. The findings will provide educators and policymakers with actionable insights into improving library services, thereby fostering a culture of reading and independent learning. Enhanced library usage is expected to improve academic outcomes and support the overall intellectual development of students, contributing to the broader goals of educational reform and academic excellence.
Scope and Limitations of the Study:
This study is limited to secondary schools in Katagum LGA, Bauchi State, focusing exclusively on the evaluation of school library usage and its effect on academic performance. It does not consider other educational resources or external factors influencing academic success. Data is collected from selected schools within the LGA, and findings may not be generalizable to other regions.
